WASHINGTON, D.C. — County resident Jack Peacock toured Washington, D.C. by horseback Sunday, taking the route Abraham Lincoln traveled while in office. The event was organized by the hosts of “Best of America by Horseback,” a satellite and cable television show which airs on the RFD-TV network. Peacock is an Irving business owner, having owned and operated Stagecoach West for 31 years. A longtime friend of the hosts of the show, Tom and Pat Seay, Peacock was able to be one of the few people to participate in the ride. Starting out at Lincoln’s summer home, the group followed the same route to the White House which Lincoln took daily while president. “It was just incredible,” Peacock said Monday. “It was a very special day and was certainly one of the highlights of my life.” According to Peacock, the trek was filmed for a documentary to be called “Presidents and Their Horses.

Equestrian Trail Planning Public Meeting at Cherry Creek Inn – July 14, 2010

Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Economic Development is currently overseeing the development of a plan for the creation of equestrian trails in the Boutwell State Forest/Cherry Creek area of Chautauqua County that is slated for completion by early 2011. The Plan will initially create approximately 20 to 30 miles of horse-friendly trails.

As part of this initiative, Alta Planning + Design, a firm located in Saratoga Springs, NY that specializes in trail planning, will be conducting a community workshop at the Cherry Creek Inn on Wednesday, July 14th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. The purpose of this workshop is to provide an overview of the planning process and the proposed plan, seek public input regarding the initiative, and develop action items going forward.

The County Department of Planning & Economic Development and County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency have committed funding for the initial phase of this project, geared initially towards developing a plan for the creation of equestrian/multi-use trails in the Boutwell State Forest area of the county. The trails would extend from the Ruttenbur Road in the north, to Cockaigne Ski Area in the south, and from Cockaigne Ski Area to Cherry Creek.  These dedicated horse trails would extend through a combination of state forest areas, private properties (if we can secure permission) and perhaps existing pathways.

We encourage the opinions and ideas of Chautauqua County residents. The information obtained from these meetings is the initial stage in the planning process and will supplement the input that is being garnered through other means, such as stakeholder interviews and through the collection of existing data and information.  The community workshop is scheduled to be no longer than two hours in length, and will consist of an opening discussion by Alta, a description of the project with a timeline, a group discussions regarding the project and a Q & A period. Refreshments will be provided.

Any comments or questions regarding the upcoming public meetings or any other aspects of the Comprehensive Plan should be addressed to Mark Geise, Deputy Director, Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Economic Development, at geisem@co.chautauqua.ny.us or 716-661-8912. Community Workshops (Round #2) - to be Conducted May 18th and 19th for Chautauqua County's Comprehensive Plan

Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Economic Development is currently overseeing the development of a new Comprehensive Plan for the county that is slated for completion in November of 2010. The Plan will create a 10 to 15 year vision for enhancing the future of the county that capitalizes on our assets while preserving the rural charm of the region.  The results of the plan will include a prioritized list of projects, programs and policy statements to be implemented over time.

As part of this initiative, Wallace, Roberts and Todd, LLC (WRT), an award-winning planning, urban design, landscape architecture and architecture firm headquartered in Philadelphia, PA, will be conducting community workshops at locations in north and south Chautauqua County. The purpose of these workshops is to provide an overview of the planning process and public input provided to date, present the strategic issues identified during the first round of public and focus group meetings held in mid-February, finalize the vision statement for the county, and develop action items going forward. A public meeting will be held in the North County on Tuesday, May 18th at 6:30 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel, Lighthouse Ballroom, and in the South County on Wednesday, May 19th at 6:30 p.m. at JCC South, the Hamilton Collegiate Center (Student Union).

It is crucial that this resource-based approach to decision-making be guided by the opinions and ideas of Chautauqua County residents. The information obtained from these meetings is the initial stage in the planning process and will supplement the input that is being garnered through other means, such as the recently-conducted phone survey, the planning website, focus group interviews, and other current and future initiatives. The community workshops are scheduled to be two and half hours in length, and will consist of an opening PowerPoint Presentation by WRT, a draft vision statement review, and small group discussions focused on vision statement topics: economy, environment and community. Refreshments will be provided.

County Executive Greg Edwards urges residents to take the time to attend and participate in these all-important meetings. The public's input is greatly appreciated, and it is essential for developing a Plan that represents the will of the community. Although there are and will be other opportunities to participate, this is the next step in formulating policies, programs and projects that will guide the future of Chautauqua County. Please participate so that your voice is heard.
